great big star block tutorial

Finally! I promised you a tutorial and I'm delivering!

You will need;
half square triangles die - 4.5" finished square
square die - 4.5" (4" finished) square

block

You need to cut the following pieces;

(from background fabric - grey in this case)
4 squares
24 triangles

(from colour 1)
4 squares
8 triangles

(from colour 2)
16 triangles

You also need to cut 1 square from a 3rd colour that measures 8.5" using your rotary and ruler - or you could use 4 additional 4.5" squares sewn together into a 4-patch

Constructing the block;

Pair together a colour triangle with a background triangle and sew together along the longest side to form a square. Press seam open and repeat with all the colour and background triangles

Sew a coloured square to a half square triangle square unit with the same fabric. Press seam open.
Sew a background square to the same kind of half square triangle unit. Press seam open.
Sew these 2 units together to form the flower shape below. Press seam open and repeat for a total of 4

1

Sew 2 half square units from the other colourway together with the coloured fabrics aligned, press seam open.
Sew 2 of the same half square triangles units together with the background fabrics aligned. Press seam open.
Sew these 2 units together to form the chevron shape below. Press seam open and repeat for a total of 4

2

Looking at the picture below, sew a flower unit to either side of a chevron unit. Press seams open.

3

Looking at the picture below, sew a chevron unit to either side of the large square. Press seams open.

4

Looking at the picture below, sew a flower unit to either side of a chevron unit. Press seams open.

5

Sew the 3 pieces together in the same order as you constructed them, press seams open and you have one huge star block that will measure 24.5". You can make a really good sized cushion out of a single block, or make multiples for a quilt. 4 blocks will give you a give that measures 48.5" square, 9 blocks will give you a quilt that measures 72.5" square.
